Senator Reaching out to Local Neighborhoods
By Thad Jacobs
"Do you know who your State Senator is? In Green Valley Ranch and across northeast Denver, it’s Mike Johnston. Do you know what bills he is proposing in the upcoming legislative session? Or how he plans to vote on key issues and why? Mike believes you deserve to know the answer to all these questions. For that reason – to help keep every citizen involved in the key issues that affect our lives at the state capitol – Mike and his staff are creating Neighborhood Outreach Committees (NOCs) across Senate District 33. Mike saw the need for clear and open communication from the community to the legislative process and decided to create six initial NOCs, one of which cover the Green Valley Ranch community. The NOC's are not meant to replace any of our strong existing neighborhood organizations but offer direct input from community members to the capitol and from the capitol to the community. Volunteer leaders of each NOC will organize and coordinate each committee’s work.
A key component of this process is the distribution of Mike’s legislative update (see attached PDF). Each update details the arguments for and against legislative issues as well as Mike’s position and his explanation. By delivering this document door-to-door, NOC members directly notify the community of their elected official’s actions. Those NOC members can also quickly carry the community’s reaction back to the capitol. Each NOC chair will regularly meet with Mike to advise him of important community issues. It's a truly grassroots effort that engages everyday people in a process we don't normally see.
Senator Johnston’s office is actively recruiting new NOC members, and while we have a start in Green Valley Ranch we still need your help. He encourages any interested member of the community to start by signing up to meet with their local NOC and working to distribute the legislative update on their block. Additional opportunities exist for those interested.
