Education Forum about Denver Public Schools
10 AM, August 14, 2010
Our Savior's Lutheran Church
9th and Emerson Street
Just an added reminder that the INC Education Committee is working to reactivate itself, and reorganize. As a first step, we have planned this Forum with a variety of some key activists on the educational front in Denver. The speakers will be addressing what is being done to improve the quality of our Public Schools, and what INC member organizations can do to help. They will update us on the good news and the challenges -- Are our children performing better? What is being done to stop the high drop-out rate, and graduate our children from high school? What is being done to better prepare them for college or other continuing education opportunities? What is the role of the charter schools? How can we narrow the gap between African-American and Hispanic children on the one hand, and Anglo and Asian children? They may not all agree. We hope to present some diverse viewpoints.
The Forum participants are: Nate Easley, President of the Denver School Board; Henry Roman, Colorado Education Association chair; Dr. Shelley Zion, Faculty, School of Education, University of Colorado at Denver; Michael Johnston, Colorado State Senator, 33rd District, former public school teacher and principal; and Laurie Hirschfield Zeller, A+ Denver chair. There will be a question and answer period.
This will be the first of other opportunities for INC to hear about the complex issues facing Denver Public Schools and the ways they are being addressed. Perhaps some of your members who are especially concerned about Denver Public School education may want to attend. They are, of course, welcome.
